The Brandon Kiwanis Club and the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida will host a Day of Play from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 22) at Brandon Park, 502 E Sadie St.
The event also will serve as a Gold Award project for Angelena Baldi, a senior at Armwood High School.
Inspired by Nickelodeon's Day of Play, Baldi and the Kiwanis Club are bringing the idea to the Brandon community to encourage children to get active. Angelena, 17, said this type of event is important now with increasing obesity rates in children along with an increasing amount of technology geared toward kids.
"Our goal is to create a fun and interactive day for local kids, by bringing together local resources and companies while establishing this as an annual event put on by the Kiwanis Club of Brandon," Angelena said.
When coming up with ideas for her Gold Award project, Angelena had a difficult time finding something that would click and be worth the amount of work it takes to complete. What inspired her to take on the Day of Play was her connections to the Key Club and Kiwanis Club.
"I'm combining my work with Girl Scouts and the Kiwanis Club, which is special to me," Angelena said.
She said this is about the opportunity to give back and provide a sustainable project the Kiwanis Club can use for years to come. Angelena also said she hopes this will serve as a way to educate kids on the importance of healthy eating healthy and exercise.
Activities include a bouncy castle, field day games, educational opportunities and more. The event will also accept school and teacher supplies.
