Race for Life starts at 2 p.m. on its rescheduled date, Sunday, at Tampa BMX, 17302 Dale Mabry Highway in Lutz.

Each year USA BMX holds a series of Race for Life events nationwide to help in the fight to find a cure for blood related cancers.

In 1981, 12 year-old Todd Kingsbury, a BMX racer from Michigan, discovered he had Leukemia. His dreams of becoming a top pro in the sport were halted.

A year earlier, Kingsbury lived and breathed bicycle motocross and was a leader in the American Bicycle Association's BMX district points competition.

As the year went on, he went from winning district-wide events to barely qualifying for local BMX championship events.

Kingsbury crashed during a race and after being checked out by a doctor his arm continued to hurt. When he was bumped at school and his arm swelled up his family decided to take him for a full check up where he was diagnosed with Leukemia.

The American Bicycle Association learned of his diagnosis and decided to organize an effort to help aid Kingsbury in his race for life. That year more than 130 tracks participated and helped raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Although weakened by leukemia, he continued to ride and worked hard to support the local Race For Life event. He was named honorary race director for that race.

Kingsbury passed away on Sept. 13, 1981.

Registration fees are $10. For more information, visit usabmx.com/tracks/1851/events/schedule.
