Boy Scouts to honor local leaders at Temple Terrace event

Two Scout leaders with more than 30 years of community service each to the Boy Scouts of America will be honored at a breakfast on Thursday (April 26) at the Temple Terrace Country Club.

Dorothy "Dottie" Brown and William "Bill" Daggett will receive the Soaring Eagle Award at the 7:30 a.m. event.

The award, given by the Greater Tampa Bay Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, recognizes individuals who exemplify the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

The event is open to the public. There is no specific charge to attend but donations will be accepted to benefit the programs of the Boy Scout council.

Dottie Brown became involved in the scouting organization when her sons, Jim and Christopher, joined Tiger Cubs in 1986 and 1988 with Pack 188. Bill Daggett joined scouting as a youth and earned the rank of Eagle and attended the 1964 National and 1967 World Jamborees, according to a news release.

Dottie and Bill met when one of her boys crossed over to Troop 188 of which Bill was an Assistant Scoutmaster. They were married in 1993 and they have been doing Scouting together ever since.

They served in leadership positions for Pack 188, Troop 188 and were the first leaders of Venturing Crew 188. The have also served on the District Committee and have been members of the Council Executive Board for more than 20 years.

They have served on staff for 10 World and National Scout Jamborees, been advisors for treks to Philmont High Adventure Base, served on the National Venturing Committee, and been the advisors for the National Venturing Youth Cabinet.

Dottie and Bill were recognized with a National Venturing Leadership Award in 2004 and have also received both the regional and council Venturing Leadership Awards, the International Scouter's Award, the Silver Beaver Award, the District Award of Merit and the Venturing Leader's Award of Merit. They are Vigil Honor members and Founders award recipients of the Order of the Arrow.

Dottie recently retired as director of network services from AT&T after a 35-year career.

Bill retired as lieutenant with the Temple Terrace Police Department in 2005 after serving 26 years there and four years before that with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Bill currently does financial compliance remediation consulting.
