Dynamic jazz and world music vocalist Fred Johnson will perform, along with the Michael Ross Quartet, in a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Mainstage Theatre at Hillsborough Community College in Ybor City.

The concert is part of the HCC Visual-& Performing Arts Series.

Johnson has toured with B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Chick Corea and Miles Davis, and has been compared to greats such as Jon Hendricks and Al Jarreau.

He was a prominent jazz artist in the Tampa Bay Area for years before devoting more time to working for peace and conflict resolution internationally through his artistry. Johnson's bay area appearances are rarer now.

Johnson has recently worked with the long-established Michael Ross Quartet: Bassist Michael Ross, saxophonist Daniel Jordan, guitarist LaRue Nickelson and drummer Walt Hubbard. Four of Florida's great players, they have developed a telepathic interplay and a sound all their own, according to a news release promoting the concert. Their recordings of original compositions have received national attention.

"Fred takes you right to the heart of things, to why music is an essential part of us," Tampa Jazz Club president Bob Seymour said in the release. "And he's simply one of the greatest singers you'll hear : teaming him with the MRQ is really a Dream Team combination."

The HCC Ybor campus is at 1411 E 11th Ave.

Tickets are 15 for Tampa Jazz Club members; $10 for students with ID; and complimentary for HCC students.
