The Bryan Glazer Family Jewish Community Center, 522 N Howard Ave., invites the Tampa community to play Scrabble from 1 to 4 p.m. July 15.

Tween Connex, #Gather and active adults of the JCC present a casual tournament that welcomes participants of all ages, both JCC members and guests, to enjoy games, snacks, prizes and more. Participants will have the opportunity to choose the level of competition, either casual or more rigorous.

Found in three of every five homes, Scrabble remains one of the nation's oldest and most popular board games. According to the game's official web site, an out of work architect named Alfred Mosher Butts invented the game in 1933. He continued to refine the game but couldn't get a manufacturer to buy in until he met entrepreneur James Brunot. They eventually trademarked Scrabble in 1948.

The Bryan Glazer Family JCC advises the event is a casual tournament, not an official North American Scrabble Players Association tournament.

"The goal is to welcome people to the JCC, have a fun experience, enjoy the day and for people to see all the resources that the JCC has to offer," said Pnina Levermore, the active adults program manager for the JCC.

"We thought what better way of opening our doors and welcoming the community than Scrabble. It's something that everyone enjoys or is familiar with, and it lends itself to different variations of people and skill set."

Levermore said this is the first of many events.

The JCC will provide Scrabble sets or participants can bring their own. The event is free of charge, but requires advance registration. For more information and to register visit BryanGlazerFamilyJCC.com/Scrabble or or call (813) 575-5900.
