Families who live in the university area are invited to a free screening of Marvel Studios' Black Panther at 6 p.m. on June 22 at the University Area Community Center, 14013 N 22nd St.
Family Movie Night is a family-oriented event "designed to provide fun and safe activity'' for the residents and to inform them about the services and programs available to them through the University Area Community Development Corporation, which organized the event. It is co-sponsored by New Tampa Players and Safe and Sound.
The movie stars Chadwick Boseman as a prince of the fictional African nation of Wakanda, who ascends to the thrown after the death of his father. The prince, as Black Panther, must defeat a powerful enemy who threatens Wakanda and the entire world.
Drinks and popcorn will be provided free of charge at the screening. Additional food will be available for purchase. Prizes will also be given away. Those under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
"Black Panther's cultural impact will be an op-ed topic for the foreseeable future for its African:American essence, strong roles for women and how much money it'll rake in,'' wrote former Tampa Bay Times movie critic Steve Persall. "(Director Ryan) Coogler's movie is a raised fist of opportunity that Hollywood ignores at its own risk.''
Celebrating 20 years of community service, University Area CDC provides support for thousands of Tampa residents through youth programs, adult education and resource assistance. Its primary mission is the redevelopment and sustainability of the at-risk areas surrounding University of South Florida's Tampa campus.
