TAMPA HEIGHTS - This Father's Day (June 17) at 8 a.m., Columbia Restaurant will host its fifth annual Richard's Father's Day Family Walk/Jog to fight against prostate cancer on the Tampa Riverwalk starting and ending at 1810 N Highland Ave.
The one mile or 5K event was created by fourth generation caretaker and Columbia Restaurant Group president Richard Gonzmart in an effort to raise awareness and the need for testing, as well as help fund prostate cancer research.
According to the American Cancer Society, one out of six men and for Hispanics and African-Americans, one out of three men, will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and one of 35 will die from it each year. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in American men, second only to lung cancer.
All proceeds from the event will benefit Moffitt Cancer Center, which is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Florida and one of only 49 in the United States. In the past four years, this annual event has raised $350,000 for Moffitt including a $105,000 donation from The Gonzmart Family Foundation from last year's event.
Entry is $25 per person through June 16 and $30 the day of (June 17), and includes a dri-fit race shirt. Children under 12 are free, but must register with a parent or guardian.
Event day sign-in and bib pickup opens at 7 a.m. on Sunday (June 17) and participants can register online at RichardsRunForLife.org
