Daniel Ruth: For her next job, Pam Bondi seems likely to seek the limelight

Decisions, decisions.

What will Pammy do? A breathless body politic sits on pins and needles.

As she enters her final months in office as Florida's attorney general, speculation has ebbed and flowed over what the future holds for Pam Bondi. We can probably safely assume becoming the next president of Trump University is out of the question.

It would seem Bondi, a Tampa native, pretty much has a wide variety of career options to consider - everything from a television gig, to serving in the Trump Administration, to a return to private law practice, to even becoming a professional St. Bernard dog breeder.

The world beckons but so far Bondi has been reticent to reveal much about her future plans.

Let's review.

Even before her time as attorney general, back when she served under then Hillsborough State Attorney Mark Ober, Pam Bondi carved out a presence on national television commenting on legal matters. The camera loved her and still does.

Over the years Bondi has become a ubiquitous presence on Fox News. So it is entirely reasonable a slot on Fox would be a distinct possibility. And besides, who wouldn't want to spend time rubbing shoulders with Sean Hannity? Good times.

Private practice? No doubt someone with the title of Florida attorney general on the resume would be highly marketable to all manner of silk-stocking law firms, where Bondi would walk in the door making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Not bad work if you can get it.

However, when you've been the darling of the media and enjoyed swooning admiration in Republican Party circles as a close political confidant of President Donald Trump, an opportunity to become secretary of whatever certainly has its appeal.

There's been some speculation that, should Trump appoint her to a post in his administration, perhaps - shall we dare hint - even Attorney General of the United States, Bondi could come in for some rough treatment in her Senate confirmation hearing over her patty-cake response to complaints against the phony Trump University by ripped-off marks who were duped into spending gobs of money and got precious little in return.

After all, Bondi was hardly a crusader for consumer protection, especially after Trump's dubious charitable foundation donated $25,000 to her reelection campaign.

Still, considering the Senate just approved Gina Haspel to lead the CIA despite disclosures she was involved in the torture of terrorism suspects, it would seem Bondi would have a pretty low ethical bar to skip over.

Nevertheless, a Washington job for Bondi poses a problem. This is, after all, a president who can be more fickle than Henry VIII. Bondi certainly knows it doesn't take much to be on Trump's A list one moment and given the bum's rush the next.

For all its ego-massaging appeal, does Pam Bondi really want to work for the West Wing's answer to Col. Kurtz?

It's merely a hunch based on nothing, but when you've enjoyed Bondi's high national profile, do you really want to go into private practice and spent your days (no matter how lucrative) poring over the legal mumbo-jumbo of all those ipsos and factos and parties of the first part? Cue the eye-rolling.

Really, let's be honest. Despite her highfalutin title and power as Florida attorney general, no one has ever described Pam Bondi as the Louis Brandeis of Tallahassee.

Would anyone be shocked if Bondi took her legal reputation to Fox, which would certainly pay her as much as she would make hanging out a shingle?

The gig would undoubtedly include book deals, healthy six-figure speaking fees, and, if anything, would enhance her influence over Trump because Bondi's credibility would be validated simply by appearing on television, dummy.

Who knows, Bondi could even steal a page from the Trump handbook on how to rise to the ultimate political power by hosting her own Fox reality show, The Apparatchik.
