The Moffitt Healthy Kidz program at Tampa's Moffitt Cancer Center is currently accepting submissions for their annual Role Model Scholarship.
The scholarship, sponsored by Pinchers seafood restaurants, will provide 13 area students with $1,000 each. Moffitt Healthy Kidz is also supported by Port Tampa Bay.
Eligible students must be graduating seniors from Hillsborough, Pinellas or Pasco county that have been accepted into a university, college, vocational or trade school and qualify for free or reduced lunch. To enter the contest, students must submit an application form, letter of recommendation, resume, and a 500-word essay asking the following: Describe a personal experience from your own life and how it has influenced your development as a role model for others.
Healthy Kidz is a community outreach program that focuses on teaching cancer prevention, healthy living and making positive life choices. The program integrates a focus on nutrition, fitness, sun safety, the dangers of tobacco, the arts, and careers in STEM - science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The program recently expanded to include up-close tours of the cancer center that feature personalized conversations and presentations by Moffitt's experts.
"These experiences help interested youth determine which STEM careers best ignite their passion," said community relations coordinator Nikki Ross Inda. "We are working hard to help develop the next generation of healthcare leaders."
A private awards ceremony for scholarship winners will be held from 6-8 p.m. on April 27 at Moffitt Cancer Center. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer, Hall of Famer and role model Derrick Brooks will appear as a scholarship presenter.
