NEW TAMPA - A barbershop quartet, a pianist and Tampa's poet laureate are set to perform at "An Extravaganza of the Arts'' from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 24) at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club.
The event, at 5811 Tampa Palms Boulevard, is a fundraiser for the Tampa branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The proceeds benefit AAUW-Tampa scholarships, Tech Trek Camp( a STEM activity) and other local programming.
Featured artists at the luncheon will include James Tokley, Tampa's poet laureate; The Flexible Four barbershop quartet; and Tampa pianist and piano teacher Betty Chester.
Tokley was named Tampa's poet laureate by Mayor Dick Greco in 1996. Hillsborough County made him the county poet laureate in 2013.
The Flexible Four, which performs at about 80 events per year, has sung the national anthem at both Tampa Bay Rays and Tampa Bay Buccaneers games.
Chester, a music consultant and instructor in public and private schools, has also played the organ for churches in the area.
Also at the event, authors John Chaplick, Yvonne McShay, Dana Rosser and Scottie Fingar will be available to sign books.
A silent auction and basket raffles will be held, and door prizes will be handed out. The cost is $50 per person.
AAUW is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education. The Tampa branch celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016. AAUW National was established in 1881.
